The 18U Shamrocks, now 22-1-1 this summer, outscored
their opponents 38-4 while going a perfect 5-0 and capturing the ASA
Gold National Qualifier Championship last weekend in Indianapolis, Indiana.
University of Tennessee bound Christy Anch (Broad Run HS) picked up
4 of the 5 wins as she allowed no runs on two hits while striking out
26 in 16 innings of work. Pitching mate Brittany Detwiler (Souderton,
PA) was also impressive as she worked 15 innings allowing only 3 earned
runs on 9 hits while striking out 23 including 12 in the championship
game. On offense, the Shamrocks batted .371 as a team led by East Carolina
bound Christine Sheridan (Spalding HS) who went 8 for 11 (.727) with
a double, triple and 9 RBI. Shortstop Courtney Bures (Stonewall Jackson
HS) went 8 for 15 (.533) and scored a team high 9 runs while Christy
Anch, Kelly Brown (Virginia Tech/Gar-Field HS) and Dani Woods (McDonough)
all batted over .350. The Shamrocks, who have now won all 4 tournaments
entered in the 2002 campaign, face another tough test this week as they
head out to Boulder, CO on Wednesday for the highly competitive Independence
Day Invitational tournament featuring most of the top teams in the country
amongst the 81 team field. In one of the feature games on Friday night
at the main Stazio Complex the Shamrocks will square off against the
two time defending ASA 18U Gold National Champion Katy Cruisers out
of Katy, TX. By winning the Gold National Qualifier in Indianapolis,
the Shamrocks earned a berth to attend the granddaddy of them all
the ASA 18U Gold National Championship Tournament to be held in Broken
Arrow, OK from August 5th through August 11th.
